Bad Brains - Sailin’ On
(Bad Brains)Dreadlocked speed-sultans Bad Brains are widely regarded as one of the two or three number one best hardcore punk bands ever. That they aren’t the only number one best hardcore punk band ever is kind of a tragedy, seeing as how they invented it (in their spare time one afternoon, after hearing the Ramones), but those are the breaks. Take it up with Ian MacKaye.
I love the Bad Brains and all, but: Black Flag invented hardcore punk. The “Nervous Breakdown” single may have been released early in 1979, but it was recorded a year earlier, back when the Bad Brains were still playing relatively slowly.
Also, the Bad Brains don’t get undisputed top-dog honors because of their virulent, public homophobia. You don’t get to be the best band in a genre that prides itself on being against hatred for minorities by hating a particular minority. Being a part of another minority is not a get out of jail free card.
Hell yes, Andrew. 100% truth.
favourite bands…ummm..so is Minor Threat…..I think...and HR and the fellas don’t mind...
Funny you say that, I actually some him on a recent hardcore documentary I was watching, and he definitely does not seem...
Too bad HR is fuckin’ insane now. I saw them in 2007 and I’m pretty sure he never even took off his winter coat. Also,...

While I don’t completely agree with your history...didn’t invent hardcore, son!),

Invented? Maybe… but they’re still not as good as Minor Threat. Still, second place ain’t all bad.
Ian MacKaye is a minor deity.
